Why do cakes sink in the middle while baking?

I baked a choco cake today and preheated oven to 350 for about 15 min. I set timer for 25 min. and checked the cake through the window on oven door. The middle of the cake was lumpy looking so I stuck a toothpick in to see if done. It came out with alot of crumbs on it. I left in for 10 more min. and checked again, the center was lower than the first check. The batter was very thin when I put in a 9x13 pan. The recipe said it would be a very thin batter. I cooked for another 5 min. and took out. The center was sunk in and the top of the cake was real lumpy looking, but it just looked like it. It was OK. Appreciate any help. I have a new stove, maybe I should check the temp. Thank You, Karen
